چکیده

What are the opportunities and challenges for upscaling energy retrofit of heritage buildings? Heritage buildings comprise approximately 20% UK building stock challenging to sensitively because their values traditional construction. These may therefore be unconducive standard retrofitting approaches. Twelve case studies in examined. Three key findings presented together with implications retrofit. First, residents found engage positive behaviours, which differ from assumptions have a significant impact on demand. Second, models shown considerably overestimate use within buildings, failing accurately portray both construction residents’ behaviours. Third, consider many common retrofits, such as replacement windows wall insulation, unacceptable values. A number more acceptable less invasive ‘soft retrofits’ were modelled potential reducing carbon. Therefore, holistic approach needs taken, treating complex interrelationship users system, expanding notions include soft retrofits user behaviour. Policy relevance This research identified importance appropriately around stock. Standard solutions insulation window unlikely enacted by most they not values, suggesting need prioritise other measures. Reduced data Assessment Procedure (RdSAP) inaccurate overestimating occupants, should used inform decisions these buildings. Notions expanded beyond fabric alterations behavioural changes non-technical measures, including thermal curtains or shutters, likely actioned. The exists upscale but approaches must specific behaviour view occupants interconnected systems.
